Brazilian Neymar and Argentine Lionel Messi were elected today as the two best players in the Copa América football, shortly before facing each other in the final of the competition, which pits Brazil and Argentina against each other.
“It is not possible to choose only the best player because this tournament has two”, announced the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).
Messi scored four goals and made five assists in a total of six games, while Neymar has a record of two goals scored and three assists in five games.
Conmebol’s technical study group justified the choice with the positive impact that both had on their respective teams and for having reflected the ‘DNA’ of South American football, by the way they performed in all games.
This group of studies included technicians Francisco Maturana and Carlos Restrepo, from Colombia, Daniel Bañales and Gerardo Pelusso, from Uruguay, Sergio Batista and Nery Pumpido, from Argentina, and Oswaldo de Oliveira, from Brazil.
Brazil and Argentina qualified for the final, which starts in about an hour, after having defeated Peru (1-0) and Colombia (2-1, after extra time), respectively, in the semi-finals.
